Fleeing from war, Tamaki, the wife of a governor, her son Zushio and daughter Anju are separated from one another and sold as slaves. Thus begins Mizoguchi’s epic tale of loss, reunion and memory spanning a decade, as Zushio and Anju hold on to their memories of their mother while seeking to escape and be reunited with her.
