A
zany, raucous, biting satire of the racist and chauvinist assumptions of post-war
Japan, the film follows the comic misadventures of three bumbling students mistaken
for Korean stowaways. A visually stunning, crazily scored and exuberant work shot
in eye-popping CinemaScope, the film uses its screwball fable to reveal the lingering
militaristic vestiges of Japan’s nationalist past and the dramatically expanding
gulf separating youth from the pre-war generation, while delivering a stinging
commentary on the Vietnam War.
