One of the most famous traditional Japanese ghost stories of all time set in 18th century Edo is a tale of betrayal, murder and ghostly revenge. - A down-and-out samurai cruelly murders his wife who exacts a long and terrible revenge on him from beyond the grave. Iemon plots to kill his wife Oiwa, so he can wed the daughter of a rich family, Oume. He deliberately sets her up with another man who will seduce her, hoping to catch them in the act. Iemon then poisons Oiwa, who becomes dreadfully disfigured. Distraught, she ends her own life and her baby’s. Iemon proceeds to marry Oume but on the first night of the wedding, the ghost of Oiwa returns to haunt him, driving him insane. Oiwa is finally appeased when she attains her justice.
