Masumura takes on the intricacies of love in his acclaimed film MANJI. Based on a novel by famed author TANIZAKI Junichiro, a passionate illicit affair is sparked when a wealthy and dissatisfied housewife Sonoko seduces a young beautiful girl Mitsuko she meets at an art school. The affair turns into a violent and complicated foursome when Sonoko’s husband, Kotaro and Mitsuko’s impotent lover, Eijiro, become entangled. The four are drawn into a web of desire, deceit, blackmail, blood oaths and suicide pacts.
