The Birds (5:00pm)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
1963 / 119min / Rating TBA
A key film in Alfred Hitchcock’s eminent body of work, The Birds marries Hitchcock’s penchant for technical wizardry with deeper Freudian concerns. Based on a story by Daphne du Maurier, the film is the peak of Hitchcock’s work, preceded by some of the most significant films in cinema – Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. Constructed without the characteristic musical score of its time, The Birds relies instead on an electronic soundtrack that includes simulated bird cries and wing flaps to create valleys of tension and pastoral calm.
