Dear aspiring filmmakers,
The Singapore Film Society (SFS) is proud to announce the 4th Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition (HSFC) 2017! And YOU are who we are looking for!
Launching from January 2017, with the support of the National Heritage Board, the mission & objective of the HSFC is to unearth and recognize filmmaking talents who will approach our rich and vibrant Singapore Heritage with a fresh and exciting look. The HSFC aims to present the unique heritage of our young nation, told through the eyes of our budding filmmakers. We cordially invite all filmmakers to submit their work through our Open Call.
Just like HSFC2016, there will be both an OPEN category and a STUDENT category. In other words, anyone can now participate regardless of age and whether you are a student, a working adult, or a retired senior citizen. The short film competition is open to all who are interested to explore and document Singapore’s heritage on film.
For 2017, we are also starting a new SFS Heritage Talkies series, where we will screen local and regional documentary films, followed by panel discussions with the filmmakers, film researchers, etc. This is a great opportunity for you to learn from the experts, on what to look out for when you make your short film. Check out our facebook page for details and screening updates.
This is an Open Call for proposal submission. We will collate the proposals submitted, and worked out the successful entries that will proceed to shoot their short films. After the award ceremony in September, there will be a travelling showcase of the HSFC finalists’ films to various public venues and places of heritage in Singapore to showcase the short films.
Similar to previous editions of HSFC, our competition has two stages. Send us your written proposals first for consideration, and we shall inform the selected teams before you proceed to go ahead with making the films. We also accept completed film entries that are produced within 2015 – 2016 as well.
Every film should not be more than 10 minutes long, and every team should make up of two to five members each, with at least half the team members, Singaporeans.
For the final film submission, kindly submit DVDs in either MPEG 4 or Quicktime file format. The film should also be uploaded to vimeo or google, for easier access to viewing by the judges. Films may be in any language. However, non-English dialogue films must be subtitled in English.
As per the previous editions, we will be convening a group of independent panelists to help us select the finalists and winners. Judging criteria is as follows:
- Thematic relevance
- Originality on approach to topic
- Quality and depth of research on topic
- Technical competency, relating to editing, audio video presentation of the completed film
There will be cash and sponsored prizes awaiting the top winners of the competition.
For HSFC2016, we gave away top cash prizes of SGD1500 for the winner, SGD800 for runner up, and SGD500 for the 2nd runner up. We also gave away Adobe Cloud packages for the Best Technical Achievement Award and the winning team, as well as AV8 training vouchers to all the finalists.
There are no entry fees, but all postage fees for film submissions shall be borne by the filmmakers.
It is the responsibility of the filmmakers to ensure that all approvals and permissions for use of materials within the film (music, archived materials, etc) have been obtained before submission.
The final selection of all films is up to the discretion of the Organizer. Only selected entrants will be officially notified. Should your film be accepted, HSFC will request additional information, together with the submitted short film, for press and publicity, for example, print-quality digital promotional photographs, team members’ biography, and production notes.
