Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong's foremost filmmakers. But this time, he becomes the protagonist in this painstaking documentary exploring him and his Boundless world of film.
A film student from Beijing and avid Johnnie To fan, Ferris Lin boldly approached Johnnie To with a proposal to document the master director for his graduation thesis. Johnnie To agreed immediately and Lin's camera closely followed him for over two years, capturing the man behind the movies and also getting many of To’s collaborators, friends and admirers, including actors such as Andy Lau, Sammi Cheng, Louis Koo, Lau Ching Wan, filmmakers like Wai Ka-Fai, Yau Nai-Hoi, Jia Zhangke, and renowned film critic Shu Kei to talk about Johnnie To and his work.
The result is Boundless, a candid profile of one of Hong Kong's greatest directors and a heartfelt love letter to Hong Kong cinema.
About the director of Boundless: Ferris Lin
Ferris Lin was born in Fujian province and earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Communication University of China. After his graduation, he worked as a journalist and a film critic. He went on to do a Master’s degree in film-making at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. After making several short films, he made Boundless, his first full-length film. Boundless was selected at the 10th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival in 2013, the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2014 and Taipei Film Festival 2014.
The film was initially selected for the 2014 Singapore Chinese Film Festival ‘Documentary Showcase’ in April, but was withdrawn a week before the festival, because of a cut required by MDA and the filmmaker’s insistence on not cutting his film. After subsequent appeals, Singapore Film Society is now allowed to show the film uncut for the SFS Talkies showcase.
