KOMANEKO: THE CURIOUS CAT
2006 | Japan | 60min | G
Children, Comedy, Stop motion animation | Directed by Tsuneo Goda
“Komaneko follows Koma-chan as she attempts to make her very first movie with an 8mm camera and an array of handmade dolls and sets. Unfortunately, various frustrating obstacles get in her way, including a persistent fly, a trouble-making visitor, and that pesky thing called gravity. Komaneko began as a five-minute exhibition short to introduce stop-motion animation, but the adorable little cat attracted so much attention, it charmed its way into a feature-length release, consisting of five short episodes. Clearly a product of love and labor, the shorts delight with their pleasant atmosphere, gentle humor, beautiful visuals, and universal sentiments. The shorts are dialogue-free, so Japanese-language - or any language - ability is not necessary to enjoy the stories. Perfect for viewers of all ages, Komaneko is a charming ode to animation and filmmaking.”
