THE GIRL BY THE LAKE
(La ragazza del lago)

by Andrea Molaioli
Year: 2007
Duration: 95 mins
English subtitles
Rating: PG (Brief nudity)

Cast: Toni Servillo, Valeria Golino, Fabrizio Gifuni, Anna Bonaiuto

It is eight o’clock in the morning: Mario, a deranged young local man, convinces Marta to follow him to his farm. When Maria doesn’t return her mother raises the alarm. During the investigation Inspector Sanzio, an experienced policeman who recently moved to the remote area, is introduced by his younger colleague Siboldi, who was born in those valleys, to the family ties and relationships of that small community. The two of them, accompanied by Alfredo, Sanzio’s loyal colleague from his time in homicide, find the young Maria only to discover that another crime is about to be committed; a crime probably connected to one of the families in the village, born from a sentimental or emotional tie: everyone that Sanzio meets and interrogates could be a potential killer. The Inspector is drawn personally into the investigation as strong parallels emerge with a personal family tragedy from his past. Based on the novel "Don’t look Back" by Karen Fossum.

E' mattina.

THE WIND BLOWS ROUND
(Il vento fa il suo giro)

By Giorgio Diritti
Year: 2005
Duration: 110 mins
English subtitles
Rating: PG

Cast: Thierry Toscan, Alessandra Agosti, Dario Anghilante, Giovanni Foresti

A small mountain village in the Occitan Alps is gradually dying out, its income and the livelihood of its ageing population only maintained by the summer tourist season. Into this small, tight-knit and conservative community comes a French shepherd, bringing his young family, his goats and his entrepreneurial skills as a cheese-maker. Initially he is welcomed, if not with open arms, then at least with the sense that his arrival could reinvigorate village life. But the newcomer's experiences start to turn sour as misunderstandings multiply and the villagers begin to resent the intrusion his family and business cause to their oh so quiet lives.

by Silvio Soldini
Year: 2006
Duration: 115 mins
English subtitles
Rating: NC16 (Some coarse language and sexual references)

Cast: Margherita Buy, Antonio Albanese, Giuseppe Battiston

This is the story of Elsa and Michele, a respectable well-off couple from whom the bottom drops out of their world. Michele suddenly confesses that he has been out of a job for two months, having been dismissed by the very company he himself had created years before. Shocked by the crisis, Elsa suddenly seems to draw upon new energy to face the situation. Michele, on the other hand, discouraged by his vain attempts to find another job, completely loses control, swinging from futile wild hopes to listless apathy. The abyss between Elsa and Michele grows greater and greater, finally bringing them to the verge of a break up. Life for Elsa and Michele will certainly not be easy as they face an unknown and very different future, yet perhaps that future may even be for the better.

English subtitles

Cast: Alba Caterina Rohrwacher, Marco Foschi, Valentina Lodovini, Alessandro Averone, Leonardo Bono, Damiano Bono, Marina Rocco, Stefano Fresi

Two filmmakers begin to track every intimate moment in the lives of struggling actor Giovanni and his wife Lucia, a freelance film editor. Their intention is to expose precarious day-to-day existence of struggling artist. But the film study is suddenly shattered by deep emotion and simple human truth both cruel and banal, when Giovanni walks out on Lucia and their infant right in front of the camera. The camera continues relentlessly filming the couple despite this unexpected real life crisis, and Lucia’s solitude and heartache are mercilessly dissected by the lens of cameraman Eros. His tenderness and admiration towards Lucia grows day by day as he observes her uncompromising acceptance of everything life brings.

ANIMATION FILMS

Bruno Bozzetto is one of the most influential Italian cartoon animator and creator of many short pieces, mainly of a satirical nature. His most famous character, a hapless little man named "Signor Rossi", has been featured in many animated shorts as well as starring in three feature films: West and Soda, Vip. My brother Superman, Allegro non troppo. His animated short film “Grasshoppers” was an Oscar nominee for the Best Animated Short in 1991. In recent years Bozzetto has turned his hand to flash cartoons, most notably with the award-winning "Europe and Italy", a witty and graphically elegant commentary on European vs. Italian sociocultural attributes.

WEST AND SODA

Year: 1965
Duration: 86 mins
Rating: PG (Some violence)

The funniest parody of the Western movie genre ever made. Countless gags and funny situations make this movie unique and delightful to see even 30 years after its release. Bozzetto shows how to create a master-work out of good ideas and little money. Clearly this is a cartoon aimed to adults for its humor based on mocking Western movie stereotypes, something that requires at least some knowledge of the genre. Definitely a cult movie.

VIP. MY BROTHER SUPERMAN

Year: 1968
Duration: 79 mins
Rating: PG

A rip-roaring parody of superhero films. The young ones will enjoy the cute characters and derring-
do. Older viewers will discover a story full of surprises and a strong message about our consumer-
oriented world. The characters are funny and well developed. The best is MiniVip who is trying so
hard to be a great superhero like his brother SuperVip that he doesn't realize just how silly and vain
his brother really is. A refreshing change from American mass-produced animation films.

ALLEGRO NON TROPPO

Year: 1976
Duration: 85 mins
Rating: M18 (Some nudity)

An enthusiastic filmmaker thinks he's come up with a totally original idea: animation set to classical music! When he is informed that some American named "Prisney" (or something) has already done it, he decides to do his own version, using an orchestra comprised mostly of old ladies and an animator he's kept locked in a dungeon. Several different classical pieces are put to film, while the animator plots his escape.
